This
28 year old gelding named Buck presented with a firm swelling on the
right side of his cheek. He had been having some difficulty chewing
his food lately. Oral exam was within normal limits aside from needing
a routine dental float. Note the asymmetry of his facial muscles particularly
around his eyes. Ultrasound exam of the mass showed that it was dense
without any fluid filled pockets. A diagnosis of a tumor or early
abscess was made. The owner elected to treat with antibiotics to see
if it would respond. Two weeks later the horse had not improved and
the diagnosis of tumor was presumed. Because of the severity of the
disease and the poor prognosis for a full recovery Buck was put to
sleep. A necropsy was performed on the mass.
