Answer: Urticaria (Hives)
Causes
of hives are numerous and can be related to immunologic and non-immunologic
disorders. Drugs, biologic products, feeds, inhaled pollens, dusts,
molds, infectious diseases insect bites and neoplastic diseases
have all been attributed to hives. Hives may be itchy (pruritic)
or non-itchy (non-pruritic). They can occur at any time of the year
but most commonly occur in the spring and early summer months which
coincides with the bloom of grasses during this time of the year.
Sometimes horses become allergic to their feed or bedding. Treatment
of hives involves finding the culprit responsible and eliminating
it from the horses environment. Finding the agent is a process of
elimination which can be frustrating and sometimes it is easier
to just move the horse to a new environment for a short period of
time till the hives go away. Your veterinarian may use different
types of drugs to help eliminate the hives which may include corticosteroids,
antihistamines and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories.
