This 12 year old quarter horse presented with an acute area of swelling on the middle of the neck. Physical examination revealed a temperature of 102.4 tacky gums with a CRT of 4 seconds. Closer examination of the area of swelling revealed a small bite wound near the middle of the area. As I examined his stall I noticed several Black Widow spiders in the upper reaches of the rafters.
